Geraldine “Gerry” Schweigerdt, 93, died peacefully at NH Veterans Home on March 5, 2020 surrounded by her loving family.
Gerry lived a remarkable life filled with family, friends, and adventure. She always had a smile and kind word for all, and her great sense of humor was a must in her upbringing in a family of 7 children and in her profession of nursing. Always up for adventure—big or small, whether it be a trip to Macy’s or to London—Gerry found joy in every moment and spread happiness wherever she went. Born in Eliot, Maine on February 18, 1927, Gerry was the daughter of Edward and Alberta (LeBrecque) Champagne. She graduated from nursing school and then served in the US Air Force from 1961-1964 attaining the rank of Captain and later served in the US Air Force Reserves until 1966. As the wife of a military officer, she traveled the world but chose to come back home to New Hampshire in the late 1970’s.
Gerry worked as a registered nurse at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Nashua for over 30 years. She cared deeply for her patients and worked in several departments including oncology, med-surg, and psychiatric nursing.
Gerry was pre-deceased by her parents and most of her siblings. She moved to the NH Veteran’s Home in October 2019 and there reconnected with her childhood friend, Rita Landry, from Lincoln NH. Her beloved brother, Roger Champagne, also resided at the Veteran’s Home and he passed away two days after Gerry. Family members include her only child, daughter Wendee Schweigerdt of Hempstead, Texas, and many devoted nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews who traveled from near and far to shower their cherished mother and aunt with love during her final months. Empathy, compassion, and selfless love are all virtues that Gerry lived by—she was a caring person who loved well and was well-loved.
Family and friends are invited to a service with military honors on Friday, March 13, 2020 at 12 noon in the chapel of NH Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen, NH. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to the NH Veteran’s Home or a veteran’s charity of your choice.
