William F. Preston Jr. "Bill," 79, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones on October 9, 2025, in Franklin, New Hampshire.
Born on June 11, 1946, in Derry, New Hampshire, Bill spent many of his younger years living in Taunton, Massachusetts, before returning to the Granite State in 1986. He brought joy and laughter to those around him with his sharp wit and comical nature. Whether through a well-timed joke or a clever remark, Bill had a unique ability to lift spirits and bring smiles to faces.
Bill had a deep love for classic cars, especially those from the 1950s and 60s. His encyclopedic knowledge of vintage automobiles meant he could instantly identify the make and model of any car from that golden era. This passion extended beyond admiration—he cherished every opportunity to talk about cars and share stories tied to them.
Another of Bill’s great loves was music, particularly old country tunes. Hank Williams Sr. held a special place in his heart, and it wasn’t uncommon to hear the twang of classic country echoing from his basement workshop as he spent hours tinkering and creating with music as his companion.
Bill also found peace and happiness on Lake Winnisquam, where he spent many cherished years fishing and cruising with family. These moments on the water were among his most treasured memories—simple joys shared with loved ones under open skies.
He had a soft spot for dogs and found comfort in their companionship throughout his life. His affection for animals was just one more way he expressed his warmth and kindness.
Bill had several jobs during his time here, which included Modern Plastics in Taunton Massachusetts, Beede Electrical in Belmont NH, Tangent Tool and Stamping in Laconia NH ,with his final position being Maintenance at Interlake’s School District in Meredith NH before retiring in 2008.
In recent years, Bill touched the lives of many at Mountain Ridge Center. The nurses who cared for him remember him fondly for his humor and spirit; he left an impression that will not be forgotten.
Bill leaves behind a loving family: his ex-wife and mother to his children, Theresa Preston of Tilton, NH; his son Jeffrey Preston of Tilton, NH; three daughters—Melissa McDonough of Londonderry, NH; Paula Woodward; and Jodi McGrath, both of Taunton, Massachusetts; as well as two sisters—Helen Morrill of Tilton, NH, and Virginia Nelson of Belmont, NH; and several grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his parents, Florence G. Cannon and William Preston Sr., along with his sisters Barbara Lang and Shirley Woodward.
Bill's legacy is one of laughter, love for the simple pleasures in life, and deep connections with those who knew him. May his memory bring comfort to all who mourn his passing.
At Bills' request, there will be no services. A gravesite burial will be set at a later date for family only.
The Thibault-Neun Funeral Home 143 Franklin St. Franklin, NH is assisting the family with arrangements.
