Canterbury Raymond J. Scheffer, Sr., 79, of Canterbury, formerly of Northfield, died at his home on May 20, 2013. He was born in Cambridge, MA on Jan. 26, 1934 the son of Dirk J. and Mildred (Sumpter) Scheffer. Ray was raised in Billerica and resided in NH for several years. He served in the The US Army during the Korean War from 1951 until 1953. Ray worked as a painter for many years, first with his father and later self-employed. He was a former member of the Derry American Legion and was life member of the DAV in Newington. His wife, Nation C. "Dot" Scheffer died in 2008. Family members include his children: Raymond J. Scheffer, Jr. of Northfield, Dennis J.. Scheffer of Peterborough, Daureen A. Harding of Sanbornton, Barry M. Scheffer of Canterbury, Glen P. Scheffer of Loudon, Evelyn I. White of Canterbury, and Frederick P. Scheffer of Manchester, 18 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, 2 brothers: John Scheffer of Naples, FL and Frederick Scheffer of Maine, a sister, Marta Pietroforte of Pepperell, MA, and nieces and nephews. Private services will be held at NH Veterans Cemetery, Boscawen. Donations in memory of Mr. Scheffer may be made to the NH Veterans Home, 139 Winter St., Tilton, NH 03276.
