Mildred Piper

Franklin, NH Mildred Belle (Flanders) Piper, 86, of Franklin, died at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon on July 10, 2014 after a brief illness. She was born in Alexandria, NH on July 15, 1927, as the eighth and youngest child of Charles H. Flanders and Carrie B. (Wilson) Flanders. Mildred was raised in Alexandria and graduated as valedictorian of the Bristol High School Class of 1945. She moved to Concord where she worked at the State Library and the New England Telephone Company. She worked for the school lunch program at Hancock Elementary School and Franklin High School while raising her children. Later she was Tax Collector for the City of Franklin for fifteen years before retiring from the Department of Education in Concord. Mildred was an active member of the Congregational Christian Church of Franklin and the Ladies Auxiliary of Franklin VFW Post 1698. She enjoyed singing with her husband as part of the Serendipity Singers. She also had been a member of the Red Hat Society and a volunteer at the NH Veterans Home. For many years, Mildred and her family enjoyed camping at Sebago Lake and making annual visits to the Nubble Light in Maine. She and her husband liked to dance and to travel. She was an excellent seamstress and cook -- her homemade doughnuts and pies were family favorites. Family members include her husband of 65 years, Melvin E. Piper of Franklin; her two daughters, Carol J. Walters and her companion Kevin Hall of El Paso, TX, and Barbara G. Richards and her husband Terrell B. Richards of Claremont, NH; her son, Michael E. Piper and his wife Jayne R. Piper of Montclair, VA; her five grandchildren, Carrie M. Flynn, Jessica L. Roberts, Lindsay R. Nicholson, Bradley E. Piper and Bryan M. Piper; and her five great-grandchildren, Brady, Casey, and Murphy Flynn, and Conley and Piper Nicholson. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Louise Flanders, her brothers-in-law, Raymond Hersey and Arthur Goodearl, and several nieces and nephews. Visiting hours will be held Sunday, July 13, 2014 from 2-5 p.m. at Thibault-Neun Funeral Home, 143 Franklin St., Franklin. Funeral services will be held Monday, July 14 at 1 p.m. at the Congregational Christian Church, PO Box 64, Franklin. Burial will follow at the NH Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen.
