John H Hammond

December 6, 1942 — December 17, 2024

John Herbert Hammond, age 82, of Ferrum, Virginia, passed away on Tuesday, December 17, 2024. He was predeceased by his parents and one sibling. He is survived by his son, David Hammond (wife Stacy); three grandchildren, Kyle, Ryan, and Megan; six great-grandchildren; five siblings; and sixteen nieces and nephews.
John’s passion for aviation began early. He took his first flying lesson at the age of 15, which marked the start of a lifelong dedication to aviation. At 18, he enlisted in the Air Force, serving over eight years, including more than two years stationed in the Philippines. During his service, he continued his flight training, earning multiple ratings, including that of a flight instructor. After his honorable discharge, John pursued his passion for aviation, co-owning and operating Van Wert Aviation in Ohio with his wife, Joyce, for over 10 years.
After moving to New Hampshire, John became self-employed, working primarily in woodworking, and later with the State of New Hampshire. He remained active as a pilot for over six decades, providing flight instruction for over 54 years and sharing his love for flying with countless students, family, and friends.
Upon retirement, John and Joyce relocated to Ferrum, Virginia, where they enjoyed 58 years of marriage until her passing in 2021. Together, they traveled extensively, creating cherished memories while visiting incredible places across the country. In retirement, John continued to stay busy, owning and operating J & J Wood Products, where he crafted personalized wood and leather items, often for family members. He also found joy in caring for animals, as numerous stray animals and pets from the neighborhood would find their way to his house, seeking and receiving his attention and care.
John will be deeply loved and missed by many, remaining in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who loved him. Though he is gone, his impact on the lives of others will never be forgotten.
A private burial for his family and close friends will take place at the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen where he will be interred with military honors alongside his wife Joyce.
