OBITUARY, Franklin, NH Joanne R. Mercier, 75, of Franklin, died at Merrimack County Nursing Home on Sept.3rd following a long period of declining health. She was born in Boston on March 24, 1938 to John Savoy and Carmen A. Thompson. She is a member of Canaan High School Alumni. She was a resident of Northfield and Franklin most of her life. She graduated from NH Tech with a Secretarial Science degree and was in her second year of Associate Degree in Computer Science until her illness forced her to quit. She was employed for 20 years as a Park Ranger and Asst. Project Manager at US Army Corps of Engineers, working at Franklin Falls Dam, Blackwater Dam, Hopkinton-Everett Lakes and Edward McDowell Lake before retiring in 2000. Joanne was a life member and past VFW Post 1698 Auxiliary President in 1988-89 and 1998-99. Past VFW District 4 President 2008-09, a life member of American Legion Auxiliary, also a member of Franklin Emblem Club, the 8 & 40 Hillsboro Salon, and a Twin River Red Hatter. She was an avid golfer at Den Brae Golf Club and representative with NH Women's Golf Assn., past member of Franklin VFW Dart Team, Captain of VFW Pool League, and past team player at Boutwell's Bowling Alley. She was active teaching and playing dominoes. Joanne will be missed for all her baking, seafood chowders, deviled eggs, and volunteer services. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph "Phil" Mercier in 2008, her sister Barbara J. Grace, and twin sister Joyce E. Matoska. Members of her family include 3 nieces, Darlene Morse of Canaan, Debra Sanville of Charleston, Medora Matoska of Gilford, nephew Michael Grace of Canaan, step-daughter Sandra Kinney and two stepsons, Wayne and John Austin, two uncles, Earl Thompson of VT and John Thompson of MA, and many great nieces, nephews, and cousins. Visiting hours will be held Monday, Sept. 9th from 6-8:00 pm at Thibault-Neun Funeral Home, 143 Franklin St., Franklin. The VFW Ladies Auxiliary will conduct a service at 7:00 pm and the Elks will hold a Lodge of Sorrow at 7:30 pm. Interment will be at NH Veterans Cemetery at a later date.
