Rochester, NH. – Mel Endsley passed away Saturday July 14, 2018 at 7pm after a very brief 3 ½ week spell with cancer. Days before this diagnosis and unaware of his sickness, he drove across country with his sister from Phoenix, AZ to his home in New Hampshire while visiting family all along the routes. He received hospice care almost immediately upon his return home when he felt tired. Paw Paw is survived by his two sons and their wives, Steve and Patty of Lebanon, ME, and Marc and Debra of San Antonio, TX. He is also survived by his 5 grandchildren, Jordan, Jason, Caitlin, Grace, Elizabeth; 3 great grandchildren, Mila, Lucas, Decker; his brother Gene, sister Wilma, and many relatives in the southwest.
While we are glad that his sickness was short, it is never enough time to say goodbye. Dad died 17 days shy of his 84th birthday [July 31]. After having lost our mom, Diana, last October, we thought we would have at least a few more years with dad, but that wasn't meant to be. Although we are saddened by his departure, he lived a long, exciting, and worldly adventurous life.
His first job was at age 17 as a Navy sailor about the USS Iowa, serving in Korea. This service instilled a great pride in him for his country, the flag, and its place in the world as a peacekeeper. He would fight anyone who would besmirch our flag. Until this week, he always wore the flag and his ships colors every day. Luckily, he was able to visit his ship one last time in its CA mooring in February with his brother and sister.
He and mom worked in Spain in the aircraft industry for 18 years and traveled all over the world. Dad never forgot a joke and loved to tell them over and over and over. Paw Paw was a wonderful grandfather and friendly guy who never met a stranger. To send him on his way, we toasted dad with Spanish Rioja wine, his favorite. He, as well as our mom, will be missed dearly. If only to hear their voices one more time……..
